Inspired by his family and the surroundings of Chicago’s Latino community of Humboldt Park and Logan Square, Rafael Rodriguez, Légo, committed himself to music at an early age. His career began when he was 19 years old with his first club residency at Kaboom. Kaboom led to his current 17-year residency at Chicago’s “Boom Boom Room”, where he was one of the original DJs of the night. Having residencies at such an early age gave Légo the musical freedom he needed to gain respect from his peers and fans alike, not to mention opening the doors to music production. Drawing from a wide spectrum of musical tastes and influenced by the many Chicago DJ Legends, Légo pursued his musical passion.
In 1997, Andy Adams of UC Music approached Légo to complete a remix for a Ralphi Rosario/Donna Blakely song entitled “Take Me Up.” Légo’s remix made it to Number 4 on the Billboard Dance Chart. It sold more singles than Madonna and Celine Dion during the month of April 1998. Since then he has claimed two more Billboard hits remixing another Ralphi Rosario/Donna Blakely collaboration “Do You Like The Way That It Feels” and Rosario’s 1998 romp, “Wanna Give It Up”, featuring Disco Diva Legend Linda Clifford.
In 1999, Légo produced the EP Flava In Ya Ear Vol. 2 on Afterhours, which included his international hits “El Ritmo De Verdad” and “When I’m With You.” Both tracks quickly became anthems for that year’s club season in Ibiza, Spain. The EP hit Number 1 on the International Dance Music Charts and still remains the best selling release in the label’s history. This led him to be well received on an international level. Especially in Paris, France.
Légo had a monthly residency at Club Le Gibus in Paris and a mix compilation only available in Europe in 2001 entitled “100% House Vibes – Gibus – Le Son Du Club Vol. 2.” Later that year, Bob Sinclar asked him to do an unreleased track for his mix compilation series, The Africanism All Stars. “Trompeta Alegre” was a great follow up to Flava In Ya Ear Vol. 2 and launched Légo’s career even further. “El Ritmo De Verdad” was licensed to the French film “Le Cout De La Vie” released in the fall of 2003.
Rafael “Légo” Rodriguez has since started his own label, Poontin Muzik, and delivers his sound across the globe via digital music download sites. He continues to travel, produce original music, and does remix work for independent and major label artists. One of them was Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love”, on Columbia UK, whose album won 5 Grammys in 2004. His remix of “El Corillo” by La Tira, on EsNtion Latino/Warner Brothers showed Légo’s consistency of making the Latin and Dance charts. His latest remix productions are “I Say Golé” by Hanna Hais on Atal Music and “Everybody Shake It” by Ralphi Rosario featuring Shawn Christopher on Blueplate Global.
Besides musical production, Légo does guest appearances on Chicago’s “Hot Wax”, a television show dedicated to Chicago DJs, which is also syndicated in Los Angeles and New York. “Hot Wax” also featured coverage of his memorable 2005 performance in front of 4,000+ fans at Chicago’s Summer Dance held in Grant Park.
